Jan Janssen was the first Dutchman to win the Tour de France. He beat Herman Van Springel in the 1968 edition, by 38 seconds.Jan Janssen was the first Dutchman to win the Tour de France. This remained the smallest margin of victory until 1989, when Greg Lemond memorably defeated Laurent Fignon by just 8 seconds on the Champs-Élysées. Janssen had not worn the leader’s yellow jersey at any time during the race, only taking it by winning the final day’s time trial into Paris. Janssen also won the Tour de France’s Green points jersey on three occasions (1964, 1965 and 1967).

Janssen was World Road Race Champion in 1964, and won the Tour of Spain in 1967.
