Herman van Springel had his best years during the Merckx era, and in consequence his career was rather overshadowed by that of the famous Belgian. This did not, however, prevent him from winning the season-long Super Prestige Pernod points competition in 1968, ahead of Felice Gimondi, Jan Janssen, Merckx, and Walter Godefroot. Van Springel also finished second in the 1968 Tour de France, where he was beaten by Dutchman Jan Janssen only in the final stage's time trial. He also won the Green points jersey in the 1973 Tour, without winning a single stage.
Van Springel’s most remarkable record is his ten podium places and seven victories in Bordeaux-Paris.
